A thoughtful comparison goes beyond distance or marketing. Verify the exact location, service, license, clinical capabilities, costs, and aftercare before making a decision.

A practical comparison

In New York, OASAS licenses and certifies addiction treatment programs. Check the exact location in the OASAS provider directory.

FindTreatment.gov, run by SAMHSA, is a free government locator for treatment programs.

Ask how the program decides on a level of care and what happens after discharge.

Be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true, such as free travel or cash incentives.

Step 1

Questions to ask

Ask the same core questions of every program so differences are easier to see.

  • What license covers this service and location?
  • Who completes the assessment?
  • What medical support is available?
  • Which services are included in the quoted cost?
  • How are medications handled?
  • What happens after discharge?

Step 2

Check information independently

New York OASAS maintains a treatment availability dashboard and provider directory. Insurance companies can confirm network status, but coverage and authorization still depend on the specific plan and service.

Step 3

Verify the license

The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) oversees addiction treatment programs in the state. Use the OASAS provider directory to confirm that the program, its address, and the specific service you need are listed. A program licensed in another state is not overseen by OASAS.

Step 4

Use neutral search tools

FindTreatment.gov is a free, confidential locator from SAMHSA. It lets you filter by location, type of care, payment options, and medications offered. Many websites that appear in search results are run by marketing companies rather than by treatment providers. Check who operates any site before sharing personal information.

Step 5

Warning signs to watch for

Be careful if a program or recruiter offers free flights, cash, gift cards, or free housing in exchange for enrolling. Be careful too if they pressure you to decide immediately or will not explain costs in writing. These practices can be signs that someone is being recruited for profit rather than matched to appropriate care.

Program comparison checklist

  • Is this exact location listed in the OASAS provider directory?
  • Which levels of care are offered, and how is placement decided?
  • Are medications for opioid and alcohol use disorder available?
  • Are mental health conditions treated at the same time?
  • Who is on staff, and what are their licenses?
  • Is there a written estimate of costs and insurance coverage?
  • What is the discharge and continuing-care plan?
